The Story of Ama

Hello children, my name is Ama. I live in Tamil Nadu in India. Did you notice it on the front page?

When I was six years old my family could no longer look after me so they had to abandon me outside a police station. I became an orphan and cried a lot.

The police rang Father Antony at Saint Joseph’s Institute. This very special school has been supported by Mission Together for a long, long time. It looks after 1,300 abandoned children.

Father Antony took me to this lovely place, and gave me food, a home, education and friends.

When I arrived at Saint Joseph’s, the older children welcomed me with a special ceremony. They put a beautiful flower garland around my neck and danced for me. They looked after me and helped me to feel happy again

At Saint Joseph’s we follow a special timetable which divides our time between study, games and housework. It makes us all feel safe and at home. It also helps us to pray every day.

I pray for you. Will you pray for me as well?

In our spare time we learn how to make baskets from colourful plastic string. We use them to carry our shopping and school books. Do you know how to weave?

It is great fun but you have to concentrate a lot.

The girls play skipping games and teach each other traditional dances. Boys often play football or board games. We all love to dance. Many of our dances tell a story. Can you tell a story through dance?

All my friends are members of Mission Together in India. We care for other children, pray and share with them. We also have our Mission Together badge. I am happy here and now I want to belong to the family of Jesus.

I will be baptised soon. My baptismal name will be Mary.

I have a friend called Rajat - which means silver. He survived the Tsunami by hanging on to his fishing boat. Rajat lost his parents and his home. I would like him to come and be happy at St Joseph’s too. But he has to help his cousins with fishing every day. Children in Mission Together, can you help Rajat?

The family of Jesus help each other in love. Children like Rajat and those at Saint Joseph’s need your help. Can you live up to your motto children helping children?

Can you pray for us and share with us, and so help all the children in Tamil Nadu who need your help? There are so many of them!
