Mission Together No. 17 2005/2006

The story of Badu from Ghana

Focus on  Ghana

My name is Badu. I live in Ghana, a country in Africa. When I was born I fell very ill. I had to live in a special clinic where I felt lonely. Soon I made friends with other children and we learned how to pray.

When I was five I was strong enough to go home. I helped my brothers to grow peanuts, to sell in the market. One year, after no rain, the peanuts did not grow. We had nothing to sell. We were hungry.

Fr Roger helped us. He was building a new Mission Together school for poor children. He asked me to do some work for him. I was happy because now we had enough food for my family and friends. One day Father Roger gave me some oranges for my family. They were wrapped in newspaper. I tried to read the newspaper but I had never been to school. My family could not afford to pay for me so Fr Roger decided to give me a free place in the Mission Together school.

I enjoy reading, especially Bible Stories. I wanted to be able to welcome and help other children like Jesus did so I worked very hard and went to university. I like the story of the Good Samaritan. Do you know what Jesus says in it? 'Go and do the same yourself.' Now I am a doctor. I work at a clinic helping sick children to be well. I also show them how to be friends. I know that Jesus is the best friend we will ever have.
I want to help even more poor children.
Children in Mission Together,
help me!
