Liturgy: Helping Hands

In This Issue

Gathering Together Focal Point:  Display of helping hands (Activities KS 1 & KS2), globe, bible, 
MISSION TOGETHER candle. 
(Fix MISSION TOGETHER sticker on plain candle).
Song: He's got the whole world in his hands. Hymns Old & New no. 209.
Leader: Today we come together to remember children in poor countries who ask us to give them a helping hand in friendship. Let's begin by using our right hands to make a Sign of the Cross.
All: Sign of the Cross.
Leader: We can use our hands in different ways. We can open them to give a helping hand.
Child holds up two open hands.
Child: I give a helping hand when 1 open my hand to give a handshake and make friends.
Child: I give a helping hand when 1 open my hand to give a gift.
Children can give examples of their own.
Leader: Sometimes we close our hands in a fist to make an unhelpful hand.
Child holds up two clenched fists
Child: I make an unhelpful hand when I close my hand in a fist to hurt someone.
Child: I make an unhelpful hand when I close my hand in a fist to hold on tight to my sweets and won't share.
Children can give examples of their own.
 
The Word of God Leader: Jesus uses his hands to show friendship. Let's listen to a story of how he would not let his disciples send the children away. Mark 10: 13-16. 
The story may be dramatised.
 
Response to the Word Leader:  In that reading Jesus welcomes children. He lays his hands on them, blesses them and says "These are my special friends."

Let's use our hands to show friendship. 

Turn to the person on either side of you and give them a handshake to show we are friends. We can also say at the same time, "Peace be with you."

All: Shake hands and share peace.
 
Going forth as children in Mission Together Leader: We can also give a hand in friendship to children who live far away and need our help because
they are poor.
Child: MISSION TOGETHER children give a hand in friendship when we share with each other.
Hold up collecting box. Give a little shake and place on display.
Child: MISSION TOGETHER children give a hand in friendship when we pray together.
Light the MISSION TOGETHER candle.
Leader: Let's take hands with each other and pray together.
All: Our Father or 
MISSION TOGETHER prayer.
(See side of collecting box. The prayer can be used in whole or part.)
 
Commissioning:
 
Two children from each class come forward. One child is given a MISSION TOGETHER collecting box, the other is given a MISSION TOGETHER candle.
 
Leader:  I send you out from here to live your MISSION TOGETHER motto,
Children helping Children.
The children may process back to class, placing their candle and collecting box on the prayer table.
