A family displaced in which the husband comes back from Middle East to see his house destroyed (Dutch Bar)

A young man who came back Mullaitivu in Jaffna District stands looking helpless his mother and his younger sister are still missing.

It’s almost a month and there was no trace of them. His face registered a look of shock. All I could do was to pray with him and silently share his grief.

Mr. Sellamuthu with his 2 sons shares his grief of what the Tsunami did to his 2 sisters and their families.

Immediately behind him are the remains of his house and the houses of his sisters have been raised to the ground. With tears in his eyes he repeatedly showed us the places where his house stood. His 2 sons are all that is left with him. A Diocesan Director P.M.S Fr. Anthony Ranjith is in the background too. (Dutch Bar in the Batticaloa Diocese.

All that is left of the Mission House of Fr. James Pathinathar, parish priest of Mullaitivu.

There were no traces of even a part of his mission house, except the entrance steps and the rubble.

Dutch Bar Even the foundations of the house were washed away as evidence in the picture.

Some of the foundations too were uprooted in the region. A lady watches helplessly in the Paiyagala region in the Colombo Diocese.

The school in Batticaloa raised to the ground. The iron trusses of the building were found deposited nearly 200 yards away.

The trees in the foreground all suffered the consequences of salt and now are dying.

The picture describes the destruction of life. The little children are laid to rest on the
bare cement floor, the body lies in a mess of barbed wire, a woman lament over her loved
one and relief workers are engaged in relief operation.
