Three Days in
G H A N A  - Activity

Aim: Pupils often carry rucksacks filled with many things. Filling an empty rucksack with the essentials for survival should enable clarification of values, and empathy. Through careful analysis, pupils can evaluate God’s treasures they often perhaps overlook and also develop empathy with  people in need.
Materials: Large drawing of a rucksack for a whole-class activity or real backpacks for work in groups or pairs. Pupils’ own materials.

Imagine you have 3 days to travel in Ghana. What treasures would you take in your backpack? Why? Can you give a value to each item?

Activity:

Option 1: All children can work together, discuss and then draw the contents of their mission backpack on a big poster in order of importance.

Option 2: The children work in groups or pairs and, after research, bring some items to school. After a class discussion they can put value tags on their treasures according to their agreed value. Note to leader: Agree with the class what values are, e g money, stars, points, grades. They may make a display with a description of each item, its use and value, or hold a treasure sale.

Treasure Sale (optional):

Organise a sale of the treasures from the backpack(s) for Mission Together projects. Invite all participants to respect the new values or price-tags  while trying to fill their own backpacks with new treasures.

Rules:

  1. Multiple use increases the value; it cuts down on weight. Remember, you will have to carry your backpack for three whole days!

  2. ‘Natural’ items have a higher value: you must avoid pollution if you need to discard any items on the journey.

  3. Essential items are more valuable: travellers  do not always have access to familiar shops!

  4. Remember, you cannot take sharp or dangerous objects in your backpack!

Tips:

  1. There might be no electricity in places and batteries will leak in the heat. Avoid gadgets!

  2. Avoid taking money.

  3. The sun is strong. Do not forget a head-cover and some light clothes  with long sleeves.

  4. It is just three days, do not take too much. Try taking soap to do your laundry, rather than more clothes.

  5. You will meet people. Which of your treasures will you share with them and why?
